Experiential Learning Center Unpaid Internship Support Summer Scholarship
The Experiential Learning Center (ELC) at the University of Colorado Denver as a point of equity and access hope to make doing an internship possible for more students. Unpaid internships are frequently found in specific industries including non-profits and in the arts. With this program, we hope to make an unpaid internship a possibility. We are offer the following three awards for the Fall 2019 semester.
The Unpaid Internship Support Scholarship is made possible by the generosity of the Daniels Fund.
TYPES OF AWARDS (2-6 AVAILABLE) & REQUIREMENTS:
Sponsorship Award:
$3,400 Sponsorship Awards will be available to students exhibiting financial need to participate in full time internship opportunities which are unpaid. The award is presented with the following expectations:
● 300 internship hours completed and documented in ELC provided timelog.
● Weekly reflection on internship experience submitted to ELC.
● ELC provided End-of-Semester Evaluation (student and employer).
Support Award:
$2,300 Support Awards will be available to students exhibiting financial need to participate in internship opportunities which are unpaid. The award is presented with the following expectations:
● 200 internship hours completed and documented in ELC provided timelog.
● Weekly reflection on internship experience submitted to ELC.
● ELC provided End-of-Semester Evaluation (student and employer).
Assistance Award:
$1,200 Assistance Awards will be available to students exhibiting financial need to participate in internship opportunities which are unpaid. The award is presented with the following expectations:
● 100 internship hours completed and documented in ELC provided time log.
● Weekly reflection on internship experience submitted to ELC.
● ELC provided End-of-Semester Evaluation (student and employer).
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the Experiential Learning Center Unpaid Internship Support Scholarship, you must meet these requirements:
● Be an undergraduate, degree-seeking student at CU Denver.
● Be eligible for either the Not-for-Credit or Academic Internship Programs at the ELC (minimums: GPA of 2.0; 15 credit hour at CU Denver).
● Be enrolled at CU Denver for a minimum of 6 credits in Fall 2019 semester.
● Have an internship at a non-profit organization or tax-exempt organization. Internship cannot be with a political party, a candidate’s campaign, or on a campaign for or against a ballot measure.
Internship Restrictions:
● Internships shall not take place at CU Denver or the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. No research projects or work under any department at the undergraduate or graduate campuses will be funded. See Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) for research funding available.
● Internships shall not take place with a political party, a candidate’s campaign, or on a campaign for or against a ballot measure.
● Host organizations cannot be a “for-profit” employer.
● Virtual/independent and unsupervised internships will not be considered.
● Host organizations cannot be owned or run by a member of the intern’s immediate family.
● Internship must be done through ONE employer and must be supervised by someone at the site. Supervisor MAY NOT be a family member.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The Experiential Learning Center will review all application materials and make awards based on exhibited financial need and the merits of the opportunity. We reserve the right to accept or deny candidates based on any of the above criteria. Scholarship recipients will be notified by or before September 1.

- *Personal Statement:* The essay portion of your application asks that you both describe your excellence as a candidate as well as justify your financial need as a potential recipient of the award. This statement will be critically evaluated and highly taken into consideration by the selection committee. Applicants are strongly encouraged to spend time polishing essays for content and grammar. Be sure to completely answer each of the following questions as part of your personal statement:
- Based on the application criteria, why should we select you for the award you are requesting? Please include detail regarding your need for financial assistance.
- Describe your goals (personal/professional/academic). How will this internship experience enhance your academic learning experience and contribute to your professional goals? If awarded the scholarship, how will this financial assistance help you achieve these goals?
- Highlight how any previous experiences (work, academic, extra-curricular, etc.) will make you successful in your internship experience.
- How will your work contribute to the overall organization? How will you transfer your knowledge and experience back to the greater CU Denver community?
- If selected as a University of Colorado Denver Internship Scholarship recipient:
- I understand if I receive this award that it counts toward my cost of attendance. I will visit with Financial Aid to determine how this could affect my award.
- I understand that if I am unable to complete the above program requirements I must contact the ELC immediately. My failure to complete the requirements will result in the repayment of my award back to the University of Colorado Denver.
- I understand that the award is solely applicable to the experience described in this application and cannot be transferred to a different internship.
- I understand, that if I am accepted for this scholarship, I will be responsible for completing and submitting weekly or bi-weekly reflections of my internship experience (ELC will provide details/instructions for reflections) that could be used by the university in future articles to promote the scholarship.
- I will participate in either the Not-for-Credit or Academic Internship Program through the ELC and complete all requirements for that program with which I am participating in within the agreed upon time period.
